The football jig bite is gaining more traction, with smallmouth being the prime target. This can be done in the river arms or on the main lake points. The two big keys are the depth and the jig. Finding gravel that rolls off into the channel in 15’-25’ of water is critical. The bait is a full-size Jewel football jig. Use either a 5/8oz or 3/4oz to make sure the bait gets to the bottom. Keep the bait pinned to the bottom. The fish seem to want it moving a bite faster than one might expect and don’t be afraid to hop or pop the bait off the bottom occasionally. That can trigger a strike. Use bulky trailers and make sure to add a little chartreuse to the bait.

Sunshine
Temp: Hi 87˚ Low 67˚
Wind: SE 5-7 mph
If you like fishing the big worm there should still be a few weeks left before it ends for the year. This bite is a bit better in the river arms but can be done on the main lake as well. Look for brush piles there are at least 15’ deep. Fish the brush pile thoroughly with the big worm. It does seem the bigger the worm the more bites. 12”-14” worms seem to be working better than a 10” worm. The plum worm seems to be working the best.

Humid with partial sunshine
Temp: Hi 88˚ Low 70˚
Wind: SSE 6-13 mph
On main lake flats with trees there is a good drop shot bite. The fish are shallow for this time of year. They fish are in 22’-30’ of water but the trees might be in up to 70’ of water. Using forward facing sonar look for groups of fish in the tops or higher up in the water column. These fish tend to be the most active. Use shad-colored baits on the drops shot rig. You can usually catch several fish out of one tree. This is very much a timing deal depending on how well the fish bite in one area.
