Cloudy and colder a couple of afternoon showers
Temp: Hi 35˚ Low 32˚
Wind: NE 8-15 mph
The glide bait bite is still happening, but we are getting to the end of it due to water temperatures dropping. With the lake nearly 5’ low look for areas of standing timber on ledge or chunk rock banks. The standing timber is the key, this bite is better on sunny days but fish can still be caught this way. Use a larger swimbait 6”-10” in shad colors with a splash of bright color such as chartreuse or red seems to be the deal. Do not expect many bites during the day but these fish should be of better quality. Move the bait quickly only a few feet under the surface. Fish the key areas thoroughly but keep looking for new water. Try to focus on trees that have the wind blowing in on them directly.
Saturday January 6, 2024
Rain or snow in spots
Temp: Hi 39˚ Low 30˚
Wind: W 5-13 mph
The crankbait bite is pretty good up in the river arms. There are not a lot of fish to catch but the quality is better fish. Fish is the channel swing banks in the river arms or larger creeks. Plan on covering a lot of water. Then you will get to an area where you will get a couple of bites quickly then back to grinding. Crawfish colored baits seems to be the color choice make sure it has some orange or even a little chartreuse color in the bait. Keep the boat in 12’-15’ of water. If the fish are shallower the wiggle wart is better if the fish are deeper the rock crawler is better.
Sunday January 7, 2024
Considerable cloudiness
Temp: Hi 46˚ Low 31˚
Wind: WSW 6-12 mph
The deep spoon or ice jig bite is very consistent right now. Do not confuse this with easy. Key in on long gravel points anywhere on the main lake or larger creeks that drop off into the deeper water of the channel. Not every point has fish so plan on point jumping until you find active fish. These fish can be 40’-80’ on the bottom or in the shad, 60’-70’ seems to the be the sweet spot. In most cases if you get one fish to get active you can stay on the fish for a while catching several fish before needing to move on.
