Shad are spawning on the ends of docks and in the backs of pockets that have bushes. Key on those areas first thing with a topwater baits. When that bite ends pick up a Damiki rig and keep fishing the same pockets just out a little deeper. These fish seem to be very aggressive and active when the shad is present. This is a hunt and peck deal or plan on fishing long stretches of the right looking banks as fish transition out of spawning areas. This is a fun way to get a lot of bites quickly in the areas the fish are present.

Warmer with clouds yielding to sun
Temp: Hi 80˚ Low 62˚
Wind: WSW 6-12 mph
There is a glide/magdraft bite happening. It is a grind but can produce good quality. These are post spawn fish that have moved out into standing trees or along docks. The best areas are near points or areas where fish are transitioning out of the spawning areas. This is a hunt and peck deal. Use large shad-colored baits and keep the bait moving. The key is getting reaction bites from the better quality fish. If fish with a buddy one throws the magdraft and one throws a glide bait to see which works better. It just depends on the day. Look for trees that come up near the surface and just keep moving along.

Sunday May 19, 2024

Mostly sunny.
Temp: Hi 86˚ Low 66˚
Wind: S 6-20 mph
Fish are setting up in the river arms on the roll offs from all the current that has been pulled for the last couple of weeks. The fish are not as deep as they tend to get a little later in the year. These fish are positioned in water less than 15’ deep and the more current being pulled the more active they tend to be. This is a timing deal. If you hit the right spot at the right time of the day fishing will be fantastic. If the timing is off bites can be hard to get. There are a couple of key baits. A Carolina rig with a brush hog, a Jewel Pee Wee football jig or a deep diving crankbait of your choice. Whatever bait you prefer be sure to add some chartreuse to the bait.
