The shad spawn is beginning to take place. This makes topwater fish an option. Your favorite walk-the-dog or wake bait in bone color seems to be the best option. The more clouds and overcast the day is the long this bite will last. If it is a day where it is based on the shad spawn once the sun is up high the bite will go away. The shas are spawning in the bushes and the end of the docks. Look in main lake pockets.
Saturday May 10, 2025
Plenty of sunshine.
Temp: Hi 71˚ Low 47˚
Wind: ENE 7-16 mph
There is a good flipping bite in the upper portions of both the Kings and James River arms. These fish are not in the same spot everyday, and it seems to be based on the water level as it drops. They can be from the main lake points to the back of the pockets depending on the day. Magnum Finesse worms, a Missile D-bomb or your favorite compact bulky pitching bait if it is green pumpkin and add either some chartreuse or orange to the bait. Remember to keep moving to keep catching fish.
Sunday May 11, 2025
Mostly sunny.
Temp: Hi 73˚ Low 53˚
Wind: ENE 6-17 mph
The smallmouth bite is still strong, and it seems to be the best and most consistent bite on the lake. There are couple of key things to focus on to get more bites. The smallmouth seem to like the cleaner water best. That makes from the dam to Point 5 the key part of the lake. They also like baits that have some orange in them. Look for main lake gravel points in 10’-20’ of water. Earlier in the day or on cloudy days these fish will be shallower. As long as water is being pulled this bite should be strong. Use tubes, Ned rigs or small Jewel football jigs to catch these fish.
